UTM coordinates: zones, hemispheres and common export mistakes
A UTM easting and northing need the correct zone, hemisphere and datum.
A projection is part of the coordinate definition
UTM divides the Earth into zones and expresses positions on a projected grid. A coordinate pair without its zone, hemisphere and datum is incomplete. Import software may accept the numbers without warning even when the assigned coordinate system is wrong, producing a displaced or misleading dataset.

Check more than the map appearance
Confirm the intended zone before setting up the controller and office project. Test an exported point against known control and inspect units and axis order. For projects near zone boundaries or covering wide areas, agree the projection strategy rather than changing zones silently between files.

Practical checklist
- Record zone, hemisphere, datum and units together.
- Test one exported point against known project control.
- Agree a consistent strategy for wide-area projects.
